We got the baby chickens into their outside pen yesterday, and they are loving it!! They have been dusting, laying in the sun, scratching in the leaves and enjoying being able to run in their pen.

The grown up chickens are enjoying the weather too! I DVR'd it and am watching it right now. He was my absolute favorite artist when I was young, and listening to his songs...even his voice floods my mind with wonderful memories.

Finding your own paradise is really that simple. Remember something from when you were young that you just adored?? Do it again! Listen again, watch again. Whatever it was, experience it again.

Paradise found!Jamie Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813102785564233937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2124651733862724661.post-47116813405390095502014-01-20T14:02:00.002-08:002014-01-20T14:02:45.449-08:00De-cluttering my life...DAMN this is hard...I decided today that enough is enough. I want to get all the junk out of my life...starting with my bedroom. I wouldn't call myself a hoarder (who knows...maybe I am) but I do tend to keep little things of sentimental value. Also, I'm lazy, and that doesn't help.

So I'm throwing things in my room away, making room for only the things I want, and I realize that I'm moving things around more than I'm getting rid of things. So I throw a bunch more things away, then keep cleaning. Pretty soon I'm just moving things around again.

This is really hard.

I know I don't use a lot of this stuff, and I never will, but it really is hard to get rid of things that I had plans for. I'm hoping that once I have it all gone, I'll feel clean and fresh and ready for a new adventure...but still keeping things simple. I want a simple life, filled with only the people and things that I love.

Wish me luck. I will definitely keep you posted.

I know God will help me.

I've decided, with the help of my own crazy brain and the kind words of others that I need to put more focus into this blog.

When I decided to call it my little slice of paradise, I didn't realize how true those words would ring for me...my paradise is all around me, and I see it everywhere I go.

Even now, as I sit at my friend's kitchen table writing, away from home and family, I feel completely content because my happiness is right here in my little beating heart. It's next to me in the dog sleeping, and in the smile of the flamingo in the corner. It's in my mind when I think of my cute little cockatiel, and in my dreams when I sleep.

Sometimes I feel like crying, because I have been so blessed with so much paradise in my life, that I feel compelled to share it with the world, and I hope that through my blog I can do that. I have happiness all around me, practically kicking me in the teeth, but I failed to realize until just this very moment that it needs to burst forth from me and into the world.

Happiness and love and friendship and paradise...yes...paradise are all around us, and all you have to do is open your eyes to it (or finally realize that it IS kicking you in the teeth).

I hope you'll follow me on this journey of mine, and realize that the world is a lot brighter and happier and more full of glitter and fun and love than you ever realized.

God bless all of you, and I hope you have a wonderful day!

all my love, Jamie

Hello all...I'm going to try something new. I'm going to try to post a picture, every day!

I want you all to be part of my little slice of paradise, and I'm hoping this will be a fun, quick way to do it.

Here is my picture for today! SOAP!
I'm trying my hand at soap making, and here is my first attempt. It's actually intended to be used as shampoo. I got the recipe from an awesome video on youtube. Check it out!

I used the same recipe, but different scents, and obviously a different mold.

I made it Sunday, and took it out of the mold today...now I have to let it sit for four weeks.

Can't wait to try it out...it smells lovely!

Until tomorrow!

Okay, starting with the green, the top egg is from Nugget. It's hard to tell, but her eggs are a more olive tone than the rest. They are really pretty. The middle green egg is from Sparkles. She lays an egg that's a bit longer and more oblong than the bottom egg, which is from Freckles. Her eggs are more round, and super cute!

Now, the brown eggs. The bottom brown egg is a bit more pale, but large, and that one is from Clara. The brown egg on the right is from Frankie. Hers usually have speckles on them, and are also really pretty. The top brown egg is from Thelma Lou. She lays beautiful brown eggs that are a bit more round than the other two.

It's really neat that even in the same breed of chicken, you can get variations in the egg size and color.

Everyday when I collect the eggs, I can't help but smile at how pretty they are.

I love my chickpeas!!!

Meet Grandma Mabel. She's our new hen. Some friends of the family have lost all but two of their chickens; this one and a Barred Rock Rooster. The rooster is SUPER mean ( as we found out today when we went to pick this little lady up) so they are going to butcher him, but they didn't want to kill this girlie.

She's really tame, pretty sweet, although she will stand up for herself (probably because of mean rooster).

We are keeping her quarantined for a bit before we integrate her with the rest of the flock, just to make sure she isn't ill.

I kind of think she has scaly leg mites ( a mite condition that affects the scales of the legs and feet) so I want to make sure that that either isn't the case or that it's cleared up before I put her with the group.

I'm pretty sure she's about two years old-ish. I don't know of any way to tell with chickens. I'm excited to see how she integrates with our flock and how the pecking order dynamics change.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I finished the main sign today, but I'm going to make a little name placard for each chicken too. It's been another busy week in paradise, but as with every Saturday, another week of egg laying competition has come to a close. The green team has been on fire over the last few weeks. So naturally the brown team had to kick it up a notch.
Just as I got up to the fence, I heard something. There was a skunk in the live trap outside the bee enclosure!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We've had a live trap up for months, but it hasn't had any bait in it for almost as long. Little guy must have just been curious.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">You can see all around the trap where it's been digging, trying to get out. It was like that on the other side too. He must have been in there since the night before, since skunks are nocturnal.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> Dad told me (info that he got from my great uncle) that if you cover the trap with a towel or blanket the skunk won't spray. Uncle Harry was right. We covered it up and carried it to the back of our property, let it out and ker-POW!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Just make sure the wind is blowing the right direction =)

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">We will now definitely be baiting that trap, to catch some more! Skunks love to eat honeybees...but we will have NONE of that here. Jamie Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813102785564233937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2124651733862724661.post-46990282644090333472013-08-16T14:00:00.001-07:002013-08-16T14:00:48.815-07:00Lovely lavender
So I know it's hard to see in the picture, but while I was sitting in the McDonalds Drive thru, I was gazing at these lovely lavender plants. What I hadn't seen until yesterday where the happy little honey bees buzzing around them. My lavender plants didn't do anything this year, but I'm definitely going to try harder next year, knowing how much the lovely little ladies love these flowers.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Chickens are very curious by nature, and they LOVE to eat. We try to give them a variety of things to pick and scratch through. They have a 12' by 12' run, but we throw in lots of things for them to mix it up a bit. I found out over the weekend that they LOVE nectarine, and we always throw in grass clippings, chunks of sod, weeds from the garden, and odds and ends from dinner left overs (corn cobs, salad left overs...etc.) Today I shoveled in a shovel full of dirt from our back yard. They love new things to explore, and were quick to start kicking it apart looking for bugs and things. They are so cute!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Then tonight I finished a dish cloth that I started yesterday. It's a super simple pattern, and I love it because it looks like honeycomb. I happened across this really neat blog site that has a new dishcloth pattern every week. I found it around week 18, but I plan to make more of them.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Check out her site here!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This one is week 16, and I just started the one for week one. I love it because it's a project that goes pretty quick, but who can't use more dish cloths??
I can't believe the increase in the number of eggs just since last week! I think the first day we had 4. It was pretty close the whole week, but the final tally was Green Team 11, Brown Team 13. The Brown Team did a really good job the whole week, but I was very proud of the Green Team today because all three of them laid an egg! I love my little chickies, and can't wait to see what we get next week.

Eggs to date... 32!

It's a slow process, since they kind of lay on and off for a few weeks or so until they get in a rhythm. We've had 27 in two weeks, so they are doing pretty good, and the other day, we were graced with this surprise!
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> The two yolks on the top left are from ONE egg! We have a hen that lays double yolks! There are several reasons why they might do this. Sometimes it happens when a hen first starts laying...her system is not in sync yet. Some are born with the trait. All I know for sure is that it's one of our Rhode Island Reds, and we've had a couple eggs with double yolks. We'll see if we get more! =)Jamie Thttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04813102785564233937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2124651733862724661.post-2193751713928912782013-07-22T18:22:00.001-07:002013-07-22T18:22:14.077-07:00Egg tally, week of July 14th
So last Sunday the chickees started laying eggs, and unbeknownst to them they entered a contest of which "team" would lay the most eggs each week. We have the green team and the brown team. Here are the results for week one!

It was a tie!
The black raspberries are doing great. We've picked about a quart and a half so far with lots more on the way. The raspberries are not doing well this year, so every berry is a treat! The black berries, though not ripe yet are looking SUPER promising! You can see in the picture that there are TONS of them cooking...I'll keep you posted!

Ever since I can remember, it has been called the googly eyed tree. Can you see all of its eyes?? I like beach trees and their leaves are neat. They look crimpy.

Now I'm relaxing on the couch, being kept company by an adorable little baby bird. Whenever anyone lays on the couch, he's pretty quick to join. He will even make little sleepy noises and snuggle with you. I love him!
