The chickens finally have an address sign!

The chickens finally have a place to call home...(well, they did before, but now they have an address)

I finished the main sign today, but I'm going to make a little name placard for each chicken too.  Just thought they needed to be a bit more official!

Egg tally, week of August 11th

How have you all been this week?  It's been another busy week in paradise, but as with every Saturday, another week of egg laying competition has come to a close.  The green team has been on fire over the last few weeks.  So naturally the brown team had to kick it up a notch.

Clarabel, Frankie and Thelma Lou really stepped it up this week!  Good job RIR ladies!!!

See you guys next week!

thwarted assassination

So I was out and about in the yard taking pictures of flowers and garden and chickies, and realized I hadn't been out to see the bees in a few days. Just as I got up to the fence, I heard something.  There was a skunk in the live trap outside the bee enclosure!

We've had a live trap up for months, but it hasn't had any bait in it for almost as long.  Little guy must have just been curious.

You can see all around the trap where it's been digging, trying to get out.  It was like that on the other side too.  He must have been in there since the night before, since skunks are nocturnal.

Dad told me (info that he got from my great uncle) that if you cover the trap with a towel or blanket the skunk won't spray.  Uncle Harry was right.  We covered it up and carried it to the back of our property, let it out and ker-POW!

Just make sure the wind is blowing the right direction =)

We will now definitely be baiting that trap, to catch some more!  Skunks love to eat honeybees...but we will have NONE of that here.

Lovely lavender

So I know it's hard to see in the picture, but while I was sitting in the McDonalds Drive thru, I was gazing at these lovely lavender plants. What I hadn't seen until yesterday where the happy little honey bees buzzing around them. My lavender plants didn't do anything this year, but I'm definitely going to try harder next year, knowing how much the lovely little ladies love these flowers.

Egg tally, week of August 4 AND July 28th

The competition has really been heating up between the girls! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, but they are really becoming pros at the whole paying egg thing!

Sleepy birdy

Love this little guy. He's been with me for four years! He's such a character!
